Leece Backhands Byron
In the on-going drama that is Costa Mesa politics, Wednesday
night's Parks and Recreation Commission meeting became a sidebar
to the run-up to the November 7th elections.
Early in the proceedings, during the Public Comments section, a speaker addressed the commission regarding the use of The Farm fields for training youth soccer officials. Commissioner Byron de Arakal posed questions of the speaker and was leading the discussion when, with a crisp backhand, Chair Wendy Leece told him, "You've been speaking - now it's somebody else's turn." That "somebody else" turned out to be Leece - candidate for City Council.
Ms. Leece, mother of five and grandma of one, sure seems to be attempting to flex her muscles and exercise "parental control" on the dais. I guess while she's been riding along on the coattails of our young jailer/mayor, some of his hockey mentality "style" has rubbed off. You'll recall his tactic of attempting to body-check speakers with opposing views out of the game by cutting off their comments before they had finished, right? Well, Ms. Leece seems to have picked up that trait, too.
Of course, de Arakal has been an outspoken critic of the Mansoor/Leece ticket and is a member of Return to Reason. These facts will make the parasitic Ms. Leece look for ways to try to dilute his effectiveness - as she did last night.
Her antics last night make me wonder about her candidacy - even more. I mean, she's obviously a good student, so I find myself wondering about others who might be "mentoring" her. For example, our old buddy, Your Neighbor, has been a frequent speaker before the Parks and Recreation Commission. During those forays at the speaker's podium, in which he attempts to provide enlightenment and guidance to the commission, Ms. Leece treats him with deference - almost reverence.
Now, we know Ms. Leece used to drive her school board peers nuts when she would attempt to overlay her religious values on decisions being made by the board. She appears to be a willing student of Your Neighbor, so might she be absorbing some of his philosophy, too? Might she share his views on societal "blending", in which he bemoans the dilution of the American gene pool by the evolution of what he refers to as "Tan Everyman", the result of interracial breeding? Might Ms. Leece also join his attempts to expunge the Latino population from Costa Mesa? Or, has she already joined his band of not-so-merry malcontents?
These are questions that deserve some contemplation with an election only weeks away.
